I will try to say this in a way that I hope does not offend you. Please consder using at least a 20 guage for the youngster for a turkey. I think you run a very very hgh risk of wounding and losing a bird with a 410 and would have a much better chance of a successful kill, with no more kick to the child, with a 20 guage. Any 410 laod with enough wallop to kill a turkey will kick every bit as hard a s a 20 guage turkey load(unless you have added some kind of very good recoil suppressor to the pad)... I think you would get a better predictable pattern with the20 and also better numbers of shot in the actual pattern(thus cleaner kill, with hopefully no more recoil than the 410).. I know Ihave not seen your gun and you may have the ultimate 410 for turkeys, but as a general rule I think the results would be better with a 20. 2 cents, not meant to be critical, just a suggestion.

the 410 I patterned for my 8 year old son did indeed kick like a mule....recoil and cheek pad reduced it a lot - but even with the 3" remington 6 shot - at best the 410 is a 25 yard gun for clean effective kills. here's what i'd suggest - (am doing same with my son) go ahead and have him shoot a padded 410 with low brass shells at paper to teach him where to shoot and to get his confidence high. this exercise alone will help him understand the sight plane and target alignment issues. then when you go to the field to hunt - swap the 410 for the 20 (one you have already patterened and know can get the job done to 35 yards or so) and don't tell your son about the old switcheroo - he might need a little more help supporting the gun's weight (36" stoney point shooting stix work great for this) but he'll never know the difference if he gets to shoot at a gobbler.

just 2 more cents....
