The good Lord finally shined on me this morning. I almost didn't go, but decided to drag my butt out of bed 1 more time to chase those hornery birds I have been chasing for weeks. Boy I am glad I did. I got in the woods about 5:45am and did a little hootin' and the bird I had worked yesterday sounded off in the same spot. I high tailed it across a creek bottom and up a ridge circling above him and got set up about 125 yards away. I did a couple of tree yelps and he answered the 2nd one. I waited a few minutes and did a fly down cackle, then a couple of light yelps and that was it. Within 5 minutes, he gobbled and was within 50 yards. A couple more minutes went by and I could hear the drum and spit. He was just over the rise. Then I saw him and he strutted towards my decoy. He got to aboout 6 feet from the decoy and turned straight toward me and began struttin and trying to circle the decoy. He was at about 20 yards so I cutt hard with the mouth call to bring him out of strut. He raised his neck and head to look and down he went. I looked at my watch, 6:30. 21.5 lbs., 9 1/2" beard, 1 spur 1 1/8" long, the other spur was only 3/4" long because the tip was broken off. I took this bird in the same general area as the bird I named creek dweller or CD for short in an earlier post. This may have been him. I consider myself a struggling and ever learning turkey hunter and I got some tough lessons this season about how elusive these old birds can be. I do know one thing for sure. Persistence pays off! never give up! This one was hard earned and I will never forget it. Kevin |

Way to go! Nice Tom!! Seems like the days I have to struggle the most to get my butt in the woods, pay off. Holds true for deer hunting too. |

Nice!!!! Good job. I know the feeling. I've been working one particular bird now for about three weeks. Tried one approach after the next. Will give it another try on Saturday. |
