15 feet... really... right over my head as he and a buddy flew down from the roost. I probably could have shot either one of them but chose not to take him that way. I slipped in this AM under the cover of darkness and the drizzle quieted my approach. It was the morning I was waiting for and sure enough 80-90 yards up the mountain "my" gobbler answered a real owl. They gobbled well and I heard a few hens yelping across the creek. I was between the gobblers and hens and feeling pretty good. Finally one gobbler pitched from the limb and I literally thought he was going to land on me but he glided RIGHT over my head and landed on the opposite hillside. Turned back to see where the other gobbler was going and he was right behind the first and came buzzing right over. Never heard a peep out of them after that. Exciting, yet frustrating. I can already see myself burning my season on these 2 guys.

That is awesome. I would have probably fainted with them coming that close. I'm sure I know where you will be spending some "quality" time at this season. :) 458!

Hopefully "Lucky" will not remain that way for long, for your sake!

Dude.. Do I understand the passion to take that one particular bird.. It's almost like deer hunting sometimes you set your sights on one longbeard.. Last year I chased the same bird for almost three weeks straight .. had him in close twice.. One time had a bead on him could see about 3 inches of his head above a log, but I waited thinking he would step out behind it.. instead he turned and went the other way .. Good luck to you..

That would have made for awesome footage on video.
Great hunt though, too. What are their names??

Freddy,
I would've thought by now you would have learned the dangers of hunting gobblers with a nickname. Great story...
Something tells me old "Lucky's" days are numbered.

HODY... their names are *^%^#$%@# and @#$^$%$#%!!!!!! :)

Actually I'm trying to think of names that will suit them. Leroy and Rufus I think is what they will be called... named after Bad, Bad Leroy Brown and Rufus, The Junkyard Dog. They are bad dudes...

"Lucky" should be counting his days... if the other hunters will leave him alone for a few days and he will roost in "the spot" again, things will get interesting...

freddy,

DO NOT NAME THEM!!!
I found out years ago that all the birds I name become unkillable. Oh well it is you, and I think you have a gift. You will win!

Does get frustrating LOL Sounds like a great hunt though, one that should bring back some great memories one day as you stand over one of them :) I got to within 50 yards of "my" bad boy the other day, gobbling, spitting and drumming. Still a no go. Darn hens :)
