Long story short.. I had a guy slip into my setup this am while I was working three birds...He shot once..spraying the leaves about 40yds in front of me with shot. I yelled he then fired 2 more rapid shots... He never called that I heard.. I roosted these birds last night & was with them at 5:40am this morning...... The guy ran when I went to him....not sure if he scored a bird or not.....I knew these jerks exsisted put this is my first personal run in with one.... the thing that really got me was him shooting after I yelled out....Guess he really needed to kill a bird bad.....Lets see gun broke first am... this on the second....... Maybe I should tkae up golf too..lol........GUYS BE CAREFUL OUT THERE.. Jerks maybe in your area!.. Good Luck eveyone!!

Max. I hate that it happened to you. I posted a while back about my experience several years back and it sounds very similar. Just can't understand what these jerks are doing. Don't let it ruin your season. Good Luck and as you say, Hit Em Hard!

Knight,

Sorry to hear tha about your hunt. It happened to me on opening day as well. I was working two birds from 6:10. It was getting on near 9:00 while they were strutting and gobbling about 60 yards infront of me. They come out of full strut and look to my left down an old logging road. They took off in the other direction. I wondered what was going on. I looked to my left and there is some moron strolling down the road. He sees my decoys and sets down not 30 yards from me. I yelled at him and scared the hell out of him. Needless to say, I had some VERY choiice words for him as I walked past him. Nothing like working a couple of birds for 2 1/2 hours only to have someone ruin it.

Sorry to hear that Max! Our sport seems to breed this type of low life!

I had a wierder experience though not as dangerous last opening day. was working a bird at first light when a neighboring landowner came in ran off my bird hollering and screaming. Then when I proved to him I indeed had permission to be there he left only to come back and begin hollering and shooting! when stopped to do some calling as I headed out to another spot! Psycho for sure! He got a letter from my friends lawyer the next monday to cease and forbid his trespass and has since sold his place and moved, to the city I hope! Guys be aware because you are the only one guaranteed to care about your safety and remember there are laws now against harassing someone legally hunting which we may unfortunetly need to enforce on some of these so called hunters. Good Luck and safe hunting!

Yep.. had it happen to me two years ago.. Me and my cousin were working two toms in.. had worked them about 45 minutes and they had probably come a quarter mile at least and were within 100 yards when POW.. one shot.. no more gobbling.. we got up and went to find who it was but he either missed or jumped up and grabbed the bird and hauled some butt cause he was gone.. guy slipped in silent and never made a call..

Max..if yo have been hunting as long as I thin k yo u have and this is the first time , then you are very fortunate to have escaped it this long..it happens to me about once a year or more it seems...even on some of the most heavily posted land you could imagine...Tenn is in a league by itself on this whole matter...if he gobbles ,then friends, the law, fences, signs , common courtesy, safety, all be damned...the interloper thinks he has a licence to do whatever he wishes, and beg forgivenss if it goes bad for him. I will say this honestly and I mean it: it is enough sometimes to make me think about quitting turkey hunting in my own state because the events you described so upset me that I have a hard time rememebering how much I enjoy the rest of this spring specatle of ours. This kind of stuff does not happen in Texas, Fla, or Alabama where property laws still have some meaning.

I have heard that the largest hunting club known is in Virginia. It has a huge membership that seems to grow tremendously every year. It's name is POSTED NO TRESPASSING! These guys seem to find land with their name on it everywhere they go! Glad no one has been hurt. I hope we all have a safe season. Even those HUNT CLUB boys!!!

GN mentioned in his post that stuff like this doesn't happen in Texas. He is mostly right, however I have had poachers come up on me in deer season in east Texas. 2 locals with bad teeth and loaded rifles makes for an interesting confrontation! This is not a slam on east Texas, just where the incident occurred. I haven't had it happen to me on private land during spring gobbler, however. Possibly it has to do with the popularity of the barbed wire fence in Texas. If you are a landowner, 98% of the time your boundaries are marked by a fence.

I will be hunting some public land for the first time this weekend for Easterns in Texas (see BB post about our o-fer this past weekend in VA), and am a little apprehensive about it. I am hoping that the woods will be relatively hunter-free, since the season has been in full swing for over 2 weeks now. Most Texas hunters hunt Opening Day and then shut it down. Strange, but definitely true.

I must say I'm fortunate to live in an area where turkey hunter ethics is pretty darn good. I hunt a lot on public land and seldom have a run-in with other hunters. The old timer locals here established an "if there's a truck parked in your spot you have to park somewhere else" rule years ago. The regular hunters around here keep it going and we sharply remind visitors through peer pressure of how we do things in the turkey woods in these parts. Obviously you'll occasionally come in from different areas to the same bird, but for most part it's still quality hunting here on public land. Getting up early and overcoming the turkey and human aspects make the hunting very challenging. I've noticed that under these guidelines, the human aspect adds a lot of memories and humor to the sport. Get around a bunch of the locals after season when they're willing to talk and the human interaction aspect is as much a part of the turkey tales as is the gobbler interaction. I've hunted half a season now and have yet to hear another hunter call. I guess I'm fortunate.

Knight, glad to hear that you're ok and nobody was hurt or even worse, killed. It's too bad that you were unable to catch up to that yo yo. Just remember, that he's armed when and if you confront him. That guy needs to be arrested and maybe even have his hunting privileges revoked. I would suggest that you call the Game Warden and/or Sheriff and make a report. Just in case they have had a similar report from someone else, or know the person that may be responsible. Sometimes the local law enforcement personnel have a good idea of people that could have been responsible. It would be nice to get someone like that identified. Good luck in the future and be safe. Chums
