Hey guys & gals. A friend of mine just aquired an older call and I was wondering if any of you knew anything about it. It appears to be some sort of tube call but in a match book variety. I've never seen any call like this and was wondering the proper name and anything about the call maker you might know. Thanks in advance..

Looks like an old scratch box. How does it work?
Do you close the lid and slide it or does it come in two parts? I will look for a answer, see what I can come up with.

The call wa made by Leon C. Johenning, Lexington Va...(also known s LCJ manufacturing )...very colectible call. There is a long piece on Leon and his calls, boks, and records in the Turkey Callmakers past and Presnt book(which is alos very collectible); starting of page 120. He died in 1971...the all you ae holding wou;ld appear to be one ofhte first 1000 he made as it has the silver star button on the side, from the picture. If you do have the book, put up your mailing addressand I will send you a copy of the page on Leon.

Sorry, should have said if you do NoT have the book....btw, when I lived in Va in the late 60's these were pretty much the standard calls all five hunters i n the state carried, along with a little peg scratch call form a fellow in Staunton

Thanks for the information G.N.!!! It's much appreciated. When my friend called me on the phone to tell me about this call I thought he was crazy by the way he described it :)

FYI. The peg and slate calls you are talking about were made by Tiny Coiner of Waynesboro . Still use mine as it makes the sweetest tree yelps of any of the thousand or so different calls I own

One of the other two was a guy named Ralph who wasa night watchman at a place in Charlottesville and turkey hunted all day...I met the other one butI cannot remmeber his name. That was back when I used to run to talk another person who might actually be a spring turkey hunter. just becasue there were so few of us. Alos there were about 100 turkey west of the blue ridge then too...:>)If you found a gobblin bird you spentthe season with him.

Yeap & u told not a soul where he was..I sit & listen about how they hunted them & the all season quest for one long beard....Great bird hunters they both are.... its sad both cant go like they want to ..they still hunt...the heart is willing, the body can't.. I have learned much from them these past 5yrs.. u might say I have learned a lifetime of spring turkey lessons from them. Blessed I am!
