I have hunted a total of 5 days...4 during the second week of the turkey season and Thanksgiving Day. I saw one gang of birds. I have talked to a few local hunting clubs that told me they have not seen a gang at all after hunting the first week of the general deer season. I saw several hens in the spring and they all seemed to have decent hatches. However, weeks after the hatch I saw the same hens with only one or two poults left from their original hatch. I guess it was due to the drought but I don't believe too many "summer birds" made it. I saw 3 gangs last year between 15 to 40 birds. I don't understand where they could have gone. Has anyone experienced the same thing? I have two oat fields that have been big producers in the past but have not even seen so much as a track in the mud. Weird? I know there was huge mast crop but not even seeing tracks is very discouraging.

I have found zero mast in my outings in Craig and Montgomery County in the National Forest. The only birds I've seen thus far this year were two gobblers traveling together on the opening day of muzzleloader season for deer in Craig County.

Well I've been hunting the same areas as Dale... but am right there with you two guys. I actually found a "little" turkey sign last week and was estactic. The areas that I ALWAYS find turkeys in are bare of the birds this fall???

Hey Buddy... that's a good question! I'm not sure where in the state you are located but predators are probably to blame and the drought certainly didn't help. Coyotes are new to our area and are a new threat to the birds. I would be willing to bet that you have some fat coyotes, foxes, etc. hanging around... nature's pretty tough... They'll be back...
