I am really shocked at how few turkeys I have seen thus far. I hunted during the blackpowder season last year and saw 3 to 4 gangs of birds in the 8 to 40 bird range. So far this year I have seen one gang of 8 birds and that is it. I have spent 5 days in the woods 4 during the first turkey season and Thanksgiving Day. I don't understand. I know I saw some hens this summer with a few poults but as the summer went on these hens were showing up with fewer chicks. I saw one bird with 10 chicks and two weeks later she had only one with her. The hatch seemed good but the survival rate for first year birds must have been pretty poor. Anyone experiencing the same thing? I have two fields where I sowed some oats and I haven't even seen tracks in the field. Where are the birds? Freddy? I have talk to a few hunting clubs that hunted the first week of the deer season and they haven't seen any birds either.

Hey Buddy... that's a good question! I'm not sure where in the state you are located but predators are probably to blame. Coyotes are new to our area and are a new threat to the birds. I would be willing to bet that you have some fat coyotes, foxes, etc. hanging around... nature's pretty tough...
