Man, what a way to get you fired up on a Monday morning. There are so many things to say in rebuttal. I say someone who can put it all in words should defend, but then again sometimes that just stirs it up more. Some people just dont understand, and then again some folks who I wont refer to as hunters, screw it up for the rest of us.

Well, This really does it for me. First I hear on the news this morning that our(fine)governor is gonna strip another 2 million from the DGIF budget and then I read this. Our sport is facing some serious situations ahead. I hate to say it but I always refer to the 2 week rifle season in my area as the time when all the nuts come out. They shoot at anything that moves. Anywhere, Anytime. Most of us are responsible, ethical and respectful of the game we persue. But it only takes a few irresponsible people to prompt artilces like this.
Don't mean to offend anyone, Just venting my frustration on a Monday morning.

How many drunk drivers kill people each year? How many of these are repeat offenders. How many rapists and child molesters get paroled and repeat their crimes? The fella said there should be testing or tougher testing before getting a hunting license. I agree but there are alot of worse things that need adressing in our society before hunting. Just because some guy finds a wounded deer 100 feet from his "place". Anyone ever drive up on a dog or cat hit in the street. Maybe we should do testing and background checks before you can own a pet to make sure you can handle it. Everybody has their right to voice their opinion. Let's say that hunting is banned or stopped, this same idiot will be writing another letter when his poor wife, mother or daughter has a deer go through their windshield, he will be screaming then about that. People do not see the big picture.

My sense is many hunting supportive, well written, factual and non-emotional responses will be submitted...hopefully they will be printed. I'm not sure which is more humorous...how poorly this opinion is stated by M. Ford or how un-factual it is. No wait...! I have it now...the best part is the deer contraceptive remark...yeah that's an effective means. Geeze...give someone a pen and paper and a writer you do not necessarily have.

PS - Any truth to the rumor that PETA really stands for People for the Eating of Tasty Animals?...inquiring minds want to know. ;-)

What a moron! Maybe he would like to be the one to put the condoms on the Bucks in the middle of the rut, not me! Maybe he could go up to all the doe's in the woods and tell them about abstinence and to JUST SAY NO! Maybe he and all his friends could go out each evening and dispense birth control pills to the Doe's! And you never know what a good class on SAFE SEX could do for the yearling Fawns. This guy needs to have his head examined! I have never heard such drivel in my life! Oh don’t get me started…. Better yet in the words of Bill Engval, “HERE’S YOUR SIGN!”

It's a fact that for the most part, there are only two sides to this coin. Either you support hunting or you don't. Rarely have I encountered someone who is on the fence on this issue. With the number of hunters dwindling, the few bad apples become a higher percentage of overall hunters. Rather than lash out in emotion, I challenge each of you to renew your commitment to being the most ethical hunter you can be, leading by example, and bring as many new hunters to our ranks as possible that share the values our sport needs. Stop looking the other way when Ol' Joe, who you've known for years and years, continues to harvest game out of season or beyond his daily/yearly limit. Take 'Ol Joe to the side, explain to him that if he doesn't mend his ways, you can no longer turn the other cheek. And when Ol' Joe doesn't change, and we all know he most likely won't, be strong enough to stay true to your word.

Looks like The Roanoke Times printed Scott's letter to the editor in the Sunday paper. Here's what Scott had to say:

Don't stereotype hunters

NOT ALL hunters are criminals like the trespassers Murn Ford mentioned in her Nov. 25 letter to the editor, "Alternatives to hunting." No group likes to be put into a negative stereotype.

Shots in the night don't mean that someone is committing a crime. Predator hunters are allowed to hunt at night time since this is the time predators do their hunting.

A responsible hunter, which is the majority, takes great effort in making a clean and humane kill. Granted, accidents do happen, but not every wounded deer passing through Ford's place is caused by hunters. Wild animals are injured and killed by more vehicles than hunters.

As for stringent tests, hunters are required to take a hunter's education course and test before a license is issued. A complete set of laws is set aside in regards to hunting Virginia wildlife. If someone is being a criminal on Ford's property, call the local authorities.

Thanks for the post Dale. Scott short sweet and to the point. Well said in a short letter. We all know that there are many things you really wanted to say, they are implied in the letter. VERY GOOD!!!!! Glad to see the folks at the paper posted both sides of the story.
