Well I think it's time I take up fall hunting. I've read all about it; I know where the turkeys are in the spring anyway; I'm convinced of how hard it is to kill a fall gobbler; but my best friend gave me a top of the line Cabelas turkey fryer for my recent wedding and I need a bird for Thanksgiving. I've never really been on a fall turkey hunt, but I've taken my share of spring gobblers in the nat'l forest between Cville/Roanoke/Lexington. I know the land. It being my first hunt, I would love some company. I've got this Friday and Saturday to hunt. Anyone interested in taking or joining me? I'm flexible--I can follow the lead of someone who has more experience and knows the nuances of fall hunting; I can probably figure it out if you are new to fall hunting like I am and just want to give it a try. Let me know. I'll be coming from Charlottesville and tentatively have planned to target a section I know along the James River.
For those of you seasoned veterans who have knowledge to share, I'd love your thoughts and pointers about fall hunting. My plan is to start in an area that produces consistent spring hunting and try to find/bust a flock and work them back in.

Nice invitation. Thanks. I think I am not cut out to be a fall hunter and would be of little assitance to you. Now if any of you boys up there need any grouse killed, please do not hesitiiate to call.

GN or anybody else - Question: I was out the other evening and the grouse were drumming like crazy - I thought they just did that in the Spring?

I have heard them drum about any time of the year. Particularly on a clear, calm (truly windless) period with moderate temps and (maybe this is my imagination) in afternoons with a full moon or bright moon coming that night. I understand most male grouse have a preferred drumming log that they will occupy seasonally for mating in the spring and a few other places where they drum at other times of the year. This time of the year is when they disperse in to new territories...my theory is they get slightly tnked from a good crop full of wild grapes that have fermented a bit off the frost, get to feeling like doing a little cruising and before they know it ,they are a long way from the rest of the brood, with a headache, and cannot find their way back home. Supposedly this is how they keep the gene pool fresh and also begin to occupy new territiories. They also fly through a few picture windows about this time of year.
