I recently moved to York County from Alabama and am just starting to get into gobbler hunting (used to deer hunt, but my uncle started getting me interested in turkeys). In addition to learning the ropes generally, I'm looking for public land to hunt on. Someone at a nearby tackle & gun shop recommended the Chickahominy Wildlife Management Area in Charles City County as a place to go. I've scouted some of it very quickly, but does anyone have any thoughts or experience on the place? Also, does anyone know of an affordable guide service that could help me learn (I'm worried that my reading and video watching will only take me so far), or a club in SE Virginia I could join? Thanks, and good hunting!

Welcome! I am new to the area as well, so I am of little help with the local WMA's but there are some really good turkey hunters on here that know that area. Regarding a guide, check out Tucker Outdoors on the links page. He has been a good source of information on this forum and he lives in Richmond I believe. Good luck!

Welcome,

I am new to turkey hunting as well. I hunted the spring hunt at Chic WMA. As I sat on the edge of a cut corn field and tryed to get a few shock gobbles, I heard at least 20 Owls in the woods behind me, you know the non-winged variety. The woods were full of hunters. Trucks were parked at every possible spot. I would imagine that fall hunting with deer in season also will be much the same way. Don't get me wrong, it's nice land, just crowded. I would imagine that weekdays are less crowded. I am also new to deer hunting and wouldn't mind a trip to the Chic if you were so inclined. You might also check out Hog Island in Surry just across the river. That is another WMA that is avaliable.Drop me a line if you feel like it.

I think your best bet would be to go West Young Man! The mountains of the George Washington National Forest if you willing to walk you can usually find some. I have noticed that public land continues to get more and more crowded. Be carefull and safe.

Flat,Welcome to the home of the Confederacy. Flat, I'm not a turkey hunting expert be know means, but last spring I took my frist bird out of the Chic. Wow, what a day. I have hunted there for the past five years . Now that only about five times a spring, but only once did I not any birds. I'm learning this Turkey hunting slowly, as you can see. If you look at the trophy room I'm on page 8 at the bottom. The bird on the old wheel is my too. I have never deer hunted over there , but have seen alot. I have heard there are alot of hunters in there for deer season. Turkey season is the same, but most of them stay close to the roads. The best area is all the way in the back. Coach mentioned the mountains. A great place to go. I will be leaving on the 14 or 15 of Nov. A group of us go up every year.We camp in in an old CCC camping area. Theres always room for more? Forgive for the mistakes in here, I know there is a few haha.

Thanks ya'll for the advice. I had heard that the woods were pretty crowded out there. I have a shallow draft boat, though, and might be able to launch it in the creek that runs through the WMA and get in the back. Anyone heard of that being done? Ya'll think it's feasible (not to shoot from the boat, just as a means of transpo)? Also, how would one navigate the GW forest? Any general suggestions at where to start? Thanks, and good hunting,

John

John there are numerous areas in the national forrest to hunt, probably each as good as another. I spring Turkey hunted in the Gw at a place called North River. It is rough but has marked paths etc yet a few paces in any direction and you would hardley know it was there. Only got a chance at one turkey that morning thou! Anyway, its someplace to start!

Tim I enjoyed the chat earlier today. I would enjoy the mountains. My dad was in the CCC during the depression. They had a place to stay and were well fed, and had money to send home to help their families. It was an all around good deal. It helped Americans, and America. Dad said they build Dams, roads, fought forrest fires, etc. My dad moved from camp to camp, went all the way to the west coast. He might never have gotten to otherwise. Anyway I digress... We should talk again closer to open season.

Went and scouted the WMA yesterday and surprised a good-sized gobbler near the road near the boat ramp road. There were plenty of acorns on the ground were he was at. Ya'll were right in terms of crowds - mid-afternoon on a weekday and there was at least one truck in almost every parking area.
