Been travelling some this fall to bird hunt with young setters and I can tell you I have seen a LOT of turkeys from the vehicle, as well as bumping in to them in the field hunting. I do not think I have ever seen as many turkeys anywhere (from a road) as I saw in Idaho, Wash border areas. You had to watch carefully for them crossing the roads in late afternoon as they were often tright on the side to the roads. Big flocks too, some with 100 birds in them. Had to stop to letthe flocks cross the road in some places, like cattle in open range. Wisconsin is loaded in the middle of the state too. I would think the woods would be riping up there about the 10 th of May....just trying to get you folks back on the turkey subject...

I suppose you tied some up for us? ;o)

Those birds were lucky it is fall and not spring or they would have been in trouble with you out there!

Glad you are having some fun with the bird dogs...

GN,
I don't want to get off the turkey subject, but are you trialing those setters or hunting over them ? I have a young male ES ( my first ) that I am trying to train myself. I am convinced it's not the dog that needs trained as much as the trainer.. send me an e-mail I like to chat with you about dogs.

30,000? That's pushing it but I guess we can both squeeze in there... :)

By the time Knight and Hody get through with their western hunt in the spring they will probably have run several thousand birds into Idaho for us... right guys? :)

Kinzua..my young setters are from my own personal gun dogs I have had for some years. I am not a field-trialer. If you want the best training for a young dog, and are willing to spend a little money, call Leon /Cathy Watson at Flat Creek Kennels, near Williamsburg Kentucky(606-539-9254). They are very very good with young dogs and if these dogs turn out to be good'uns it is probably more due to Leon and Cathy than to me, so they are who you should be talking to. They have trained four of the five pups in my litter (two for people who bought pups)and the four are all strong dogs at a very young age. Unless you have a lot of experience with training dogs and identifying and correcting the many problems that can develope and must be corrected at an early stage, the right equipment(birds, area, etc), and a lot of time, it is impossible to turn out great dogs by yourself(2 cts)...believe me, I have had a lot of bird dogs that were not what they could have been if I had used a good trainer early on.

Is heart broken by my friends lack of confidence in Hody's turkey hunting skills!... It's a darn shame Hody has to prove himself over & over.... I mean Freddy he did kill a tom last spring.. or was that the bobcat.....maybe that was the tom he hit with his truck.....that counts right?...hehehehehehe!!!

Sorry Hody.. I couldnt let the moment pass..lol
