I've got a question. Dad was hunting yesterday and saw 5 hens being chased by two gobblers. Here's the kicker. They were in full strut!! No gobbling, drumming but were definetly interested. We sorta figured it was a dominance thing. He said the hens were feeding and yelping when the longbeards showed up. There's a few acorns dropping on this ridge and deer and turkey are hitting it pretty good. Being there's not much mast it may be over that. He said they were chasing those hens all over the place. I believe dad because he's straight laced about these things. What do ya'll think?

My guess would be a dominance territory type thing. I one watched 2 old gobblers run off a flock of 11 two year old gobblers in the fall. One of the greatest things I have ever witnessed in the wild. The gobblers were strutting/gobbling/fighting for over 2 hours. When one would get tired it would fly up into a tree and rest. When it was ready to resume the fight he would fly right back into the middle of the fight.

It's not unusual to see mixed flocks of gobblers and hens with poults but if there is a shortage of food in your area maybe they realize this and are trying to protect it.

I know one thing. When fall turkeys season comes in I would be there making some hen yelps hoping they would come run them off again! ;o)
