Did anybody go deer gigging today? I got a doe and saw more. Deer are around the fields this year in SWVA. No acorns. She had a belly full of crabapples and grass. If we have a hard winter it could be bad over here. Felt really good to be in the woods again. The good lord blessed me good today!

congrat's sixshot! After my trip to Bland & Brushy Mountain last week I have the same worries. A very non-mast year this year in that part of Va.

He sixshot, congratulations!!! Like you, I felt real good to be out there again. No bucks, but let me just say I was glad I was in a tree! Early I had three does pass by me at 40 yards, too far for my poor shooting. They were not following the rules. Instead of walking the trail, they walked across the top of this big mound of coal that was supposed to be "funneling" them. Anyway, a little while later I see this black speck out of the corner of my eye. It disappeared behind a tree and I thought it might be a gobbler. Nope, it was a bear. About half grown. It was 80 yards out and heading right for my tree. Walked right under me and went down the hollow. An hour later, I hear this terrible noise coming up the hollow. It was the bear and he was in high gear. Ran right behind me. 100 yards behind him is another bear about three times his size running after him full tilt. 10 minutes later a very small cub comes running up the very same trail. I could not believe it. My buddy who was up the hollow about three hundred yards just about came unglued when the big one came right by his tree. Nobody stuck a deer, but we sure had a great morning. Also saw a hen and a barred owl. Great day.

Freddy, where's the pics? I know you connected, didn't you? Anybody else?

Congrats Six and awesome hunt BB! I had an exciting day with sightings of several deer, a bobcat, and several flocks of turkeys which I chose to pass on. I did not, however, see that big buck that I was looking for. I supposed he thought it was July (because of the heat) and was laying up before I even got in my stand. Weather looks a lot more promising this week with cooler temps so we will see what happens... I'll keep you posted...

Great hunt guys. Had a few right under me, but passed on them. Then right at dark I caught a nice one moving through, but no shot this time.
I will say one thing though that the BTD cover scent works well, and my new Old Man Vision is comfy!!!

A huge fox squirrel and some gray squirrels was it for me. My son had a doe with a six point following her, come in and the doe was in range but he decided to pass and wait for the buck. Just as the buck was coming clear for a shot, the doe heard or saw something she didn't like across the field and ran off taking the buck with her. Hopefully he'll get another crack at em. I may have to break out the old shot gun after rifle season and go after that fox squirrel, he's a nice un.

Stopped by the J & B Market yesterday to see what kind of check in they had. (J&B's is on the North side of Ft. Lewis/Havens WMA and on the south side of Catawba) They only had two deer checked in, the biggest being an eight point that weighed in at 115 pounds. ????

I shot a small buck at 7:30 A.M. Saturday. By far the hottest day I've ever bowhunted deer in my life. I had set up in a nice funnel, and while setting up my stand had spooked a few deer. I had just gotten set up when it started to get light and I heard a noise over to my right. I turned slowly and there were 2 big does, a small buck, and a doe fawn. I normally let the smaller bucks pass, but after watching them for about 30 minutes, he finally walks over my way and I shot him at about 14 feet! I was about 12 feet up in the stand and he was approx. 8 feet away from the base of the tree. Perfect double lung shot from an incredible angle! He ran 35 yds. and was down for the count. This hunt was over before it even got started. It was fun, but it's not supposed to be that easy, not that I'm complaining or anything... :)
