Is there national forest along the blue ridge park open to hunt? I mean, park on the parkway and go several hundred yards into the woods?

Yes... it is not advertised and they are fairly strict with the rules. Go by or contact the closest Park Ranger Office and they can issue you a permit and a map of what overlook you can park at and what areas you can hunt. There can be some great hunting in there if you are willing to work for it. Maybe someone else can give you some more information... Good luck!

CentralA,
Just for a quick note. It is VERY illegal to take a firearm onto the parkway. You will have to find a place where you can get in without parking/driving on the parkway. Carrying a firearm onto the parkway is a fedral offense.

Tscott I think you can have one, but it must be in a case behind the seat. Correct me here folks but that is what I was told if you have the permit from the ranger.

Hey All....
IF u get a park Ranger to issue u a permit U can park at certain areas & access the NF from the parkway..... There are VERY strict rules which must be followed... I had a permit last year...u have to have ur VA huntng lic & the lic number of the vehicle u will be hunting from when u go to the park ranger to get the permit..with this permit u can carry a UNLOADED firearm from the autorized parking area DIRCECTLY down off the parkway to the NF...........Heres the kicker... I was parking & walking over 2 miles to hunt a certian drop tine buck in late ML season....had to drop down & side hill that 2 miles to stay off the park...... they watch u CLOSE.... one mess up & u are done!..........BUT... it places the hunter willing to work alittle in some very remote... not to mention some of the most beautiful country God ever created........Hope this helps..... Good Luck & God Bless

I too have had a permit just like Max. I agree with Max. Some great hunting if you are willing to work at it. All this talk about the Parkway makes me question why I stopped hunting there in the first place. One additional warning...if you shoot a deer that happens to cross the parkway or ends up dying on parkway land, I think you have to find a ranger to accompany you to the kill site before you move the deer. I could be wrong on this one. I do know that Max is right about them being strict and monitoring you. That's really a good thing. Once you build a reputation with the rangers, they actually are very helpful in pinpointing some hotspots. As I recall, there is a maintenance shop not far out of Roanoke that is the place nearest Roanoke to get a permit.

Hi, Thanks to All

yes, I am new to Virginia. I have taken some geese in Sebtember and is going to try my first bow season this weekend. It seems I'd better go to the forest west of I-81.

Hey Knight - does the permit thing go for Skyline Drive as well? I am looking at the areas in and around Wintergreen North. Did not know that. Thanks for the information.
