I was Dove hunting with my little boy on Monday. He is 8. He had his single barrel 20ga. NWTF gun that he won at the banquet. I was letting him shoot it in the a uncut soybean field that was behind us so he could get the feel of it. At one point a dove flew by behind us. I hit the bird and it went up in the tree behind us. The bird would not fly out so I let my son shoot the bird down. He made a good shoot and my Lab did the rest. A few moments later a bird came in the same area and I had told him I would let him shoot at the next bird. He shoot and I did too.The shoots were so close together that I don't think he knew I had shoot. I kill the bird but I lead him to thank he did.I just could not take that moment away from him.He was all smiles. My question is should I have let him take the bird out of the tree and should I have let him thank he shoot the bird and made the kill?

If the bird was wounded in the tree you did the right thing by letting him "finish it off". On the other flying bird... You said it all- "He was all smiles". You did the right thing... Congratulations on a successful and memorable hunt!

I agree the bird was wounded so you took care of it. I think under the circumstances that you did the right thing letting him think he killed it, who knows maybe he got a pellet or two in it. Its not like any of us here have ever shot and missed a dove before. Get him some practice on the range with clay birds so he can improve a bit.

of course you did the right thing. That bird was wounded and would have died. You showed your son to go after game that did not drop at the shot. He will remember that for a lifetime and will be a better hunter for it.

ps My father and I did shot at the same time on a turkey, not until we cleaned it did we know who killed it. So don't be so sure that he did not kill it outright. Congratulations!!!!!!! On a great day.

Vabirdhunter,Just being out there with your son is the name of the game.He learned a lot of things that will probably go with him all way through life.I have always said that every hour you spend with your children in the hunting woods and on the river bank it is a hour that you wont have to spend in a less desirable place later on in life.Cherish every moment of it it will be gone before you know it.
