I see plenty of deer at the C.F. Phelps WMA, but few if any turkey sign. Planning to give the National Forest a try. Has anyone had any success in the Elizabeth Furnace area off of 678? Looks promising on paper, but concerned about the number of campers and "pilgrims" this time of year. Any info would be appreciated!

Mike,

I have been to the C.F. Phelps WMA a couple times and have never seen a deer? Am I doing something wrong? You said you see plenty of deer, when you say plenty do you mean you have an opportunity to harvest one almost everytime out? Also you have any tips for me? Im probably gonna be down there within the next month. My father lives in fredericksburg.

Mike,

I haven't hunted deer around Elizabeth Furnace - just turkey - but last time I was out I saw more signs of deer as well as a few sigtings than I can remember. Trails, scat, lays, etc. I was in an area a little south and west of there, but I've hiked around that area for over 25 years and I know its full of them. Even saw the largest black bear I've ever seen last spring! It's a great area. I'm planning to get back to my spot at least a couple of times as soon as gun opens up.

Thanks for the info, guys!

Neal--that's correct! Every time I've been there I've seen deer!

I was turkey hunting on Fri 29 Oct and had a 6 pointer come up from behind me and stand about 20 feet to my right. He never saw me but winded me after about 20 seconds. He trotted off into the cornfield with his tail in the air.

I have identified several places where they bed down. I'll email a map to you tomorrow AM!
