Haven't seen much sign up high again this year.. although the acorns are there.. some of them are rotten though.. just not as many deer overall I think because of the low mast the past few years and the harsh winters.. I expect it to be tough..

I'm heading down next Wednesday night and planning on hunting Thursday through Saturday.. What kind of Vehicle will you have?? If I make it up there and see your vehicle I will stop and say hey..

o yeah didnt you tell me that you had some keen folk that leased Mad sheep?.....If so i was wondering if you thought he'd give us written permission just to use the road to get up there. I understand if not but i was just curious....our group has hunted up there for 50 years or better now. We had permission until about 3 years ago then someone else got it....if youd check id really appreciate it.

Yea.. My cousin has the hunting rights on it now.. He has had it for about 3 or 4 years now..

He will only let family and his friends hunt it, sorry.. he takes care of it, goes up and brush hogs it and has hung some stands and put in a food plot etc.. I've never even ask him to hunt it in the fall myself, although he would let me I'm sure, he likes to have a place for himself and his son to hunt that's not public land.. I spring Gobbler hunt it.

Problem is he still can't keep some of the locals off of it, they have the attitude that they have always hunted it and are not going to stop now.. they shoot up his posted signs and cut his locks and drive up on there anyway..

He told me that there isn't much Deer sign up there this year as of two weeks ago, but says he has never seen so many grouse in his life.. so there must be some mast up there.. I figure the deer are there just not making much sign yet..

we really didnt hunt it we just used it as a throughfair to get to the back side......we had it up until your cousin got it.........My dad is the sherriff here in the county we live in and weve gone down there and run people off from down there.......what weve had to do is go down to like mad tom and walk all the way around to the backside of sheep on the public land.......we use to cut through there and wlk over to the public land....its no big deal i just thought i would ask......he wouldnt have to worry about us hunting itd just be throughfair....but ifn hes up there hunting i understand 100% why he wouldnt want people comeing through.....i appreciate the information......stop on by and well talk next saturday

Yea.. I know the road you are talking about I think.. starts out right at the Mad Tom.. you walk out it and then it splits and you take a left back around the head of the Long Spring Run "big rough hollow" and the road goes around to the lower part of the Mad Sheep..

I know some locals who Camp right there at the Head of the Long Spring Run sometimes.. and they feel they have the right to cut a path down and use four wheelers on that road.. Just amazes me how the Game Wardens never seem to catch anyone doing that..

I had to walk down in the Long Spring Run last December looking for a Bear Hound.. we thought she was Dead.. I was just going after the tracking collar, but when I found her she was just beat up some and hungry.. she was laid up under a big rock cliff keeping warm.. Also jumped a nice buck down in there.. Man that is one rough place.. I've also Genseng'd it some, nothing but huge rock cliffs and full of Rattlesnakes .. but also has some Hugh stalks of Seng :-)

Nice to talk with someone about some of the places that I stomp on..

Update just in from the Mad Sheep..

Cousin killed a Big Coyote.. Red Coloration.. very Unique.. getting a rug made..

Also shot what he calls a big Deer and he has killed some big deer trust me.. but he did not recover it.. went back this morning to look again but lost the trail.. too bad..

He says the Deer are starting to heat up.. has found some big rubs and a few scrapes..

I think you guys should be in for a good week down there..

I also went out up here this weekend right outside of Manassas.. I saw three nice Longbeards .. tucking that place away for spring :-) and also let a spike walk by me.. I'm also seeing much more sign and some scrapes...

It's here fellows.. the magic few weeks.
